Network Technician

The Cass County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for the position of Network Technician. Starting salary is $51,302.69
Position Summary:
- Under supervision of a Network Administrator, installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and upgrades computer hardware, software, personal computer networks, and peripheral equipment; makes recommendations regarding hardware and software acquisitions; prepares documentation and provides user assistance to Sheriff's Office employees; and performs related work as required or directed. The network technician plans, organizes, and assists activities supporting end-user micro computing and networking within and for the Sheriff's Office computing infrastructure. The network technician works on servers and addresses all network and connectivity problems, security, and administrative backups. The network technician must be able to install, configure and troubleshoot Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs), microcomputers, networking and software applications; and to serve as a technical resource to end users of technology and to perform a variety of other duties relative to assigned area of responsibility. The network technician will assist in design and modification of existing network configuration to maximize efficiency and security.
- Work independently to support Windows servers and desktop computers.
- Respond to user support requests in a timely manner.
- Maintain DNS, DHCP, firewalls, routers, print services, e-mail, database and web and ftp services for internal network infrastructure.
- Ensure secure operation of all servers and services through the use of security and encryption technologies.
- Replace defective hardware on workstations and servers as necessary.
- Work closely with IT professionals and resources on system maintenance and development.
- Perform maintenance on user accounts. Add, remove and modify accounts as necessary.
- Maintain integrity of file/database server and perform recovery when possible.
- Research, install, and test software updates and patches to supported applications and various operating systems.
- Research new technologies and present recommendations on hardware and software purchases.
- Update equipment inventory for tracking purposes.
- Document and log all changes to system software and configurations.
- Position includes sharing off-hour support coverage.
- Install, configure and troubleshoot LANs, WANs, microcomputers, data and networking.
- Establish and maintain electronic communication and data transfer between district sites.
- Reconfigure, upgrade and troubleshoot hardware as appropriate; perform hardware assembly, installation, configuration, maintenance and repair of microcomputers, LANs and WANs.
- Serve as a technical resource to users, providing technical information and assistance by phone or on site.
- Disseminate current literature and research which contributes to the improvement of instruction using technology.
- Evaluates the quality and value of hardware and software products through testing and monitoring of trade magazine assessments of new products. Installs newly acquired hardware and software on the network. Keeps informed of new technology and techniques.
- Research answers and provide end user support on site and remotely regarding supported software.
- Install, terminate, test and troubleshoot in-house station cable; coordinate cabling projects.
- Install, configure, repair, and troubleshoot all aspects of technology.
Requirements:
- Must posses a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Equivalent to completion of two years of college-level coursework in computer science, information technology; or a related field and two years of general computer installation, maintenance and repair experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above.
Knowledge / Abilities:
- Principles, basic operation, and installation of LANs, WANs, and related software.
- Various software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, database management, telecommunications and graphics programs.
- Advanced commands and computer operating systems and standard applications and languages utilized by the Sheriff's Office network infrastructure including but not limited to Server NT, Server 2000, Server 2003, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Active Directory, and SQL Server.
- Network and software maintenance and preventive maintenance techniques.
- Network performance tuning and development of system support software.
- Data security standards and practices.
- Microcomputers, terminals, file servers and related peripheral equipment.
- Principles of data communicating and computer operations and capabilities.
- Principles and techniques of microcomputer hardware and software installation.
- Operating principles, methods, practices, options, and limitations of a wide range of computer hardware related to microcomputers.
- Basic local and wide area network systems, including topologies and protocols.
- Research techniques, resources, methods and procedures.
