Fatal Fire in Rural Pleasant Hill

Detectives with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office along with the Central Cass County Fire Protection District and Missouri State Fire Marshall’s Office are investigating a fatal fire reported around 1:21 a.m. Friday morning in rural Pleasant Hill. Deputies arrived on scene in the 20000 block of E. 203rd Street shortly after an occupant of the residence reported the fire. Deputies found a single story residence engulfed in smoke.
Firefighters with the Central Cass County Fire Protection District arrived on scene and extinguished the fire. Neighboring fire departments also responded to the scene for mutual-aid. Fire personnel advised that the body of a deceased individual was located inside the residence. Fire Investigators with the Central Cass County Fire Protection District and Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office are working to determine the cause of the fire.
Detectives will work the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine a positive identification of the victim. There were no other reported injuries at the scene.

Victim Identified in Fatal House Fire
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim as Norman R. Caywood, 76, of Pleasant Hill. Fire personnel located Mr. Caywood inside the residence. Fire Investigators with the Central Cass Fire Protection District and Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office are working to determine the cause of the fire, however it does not appear to be suspicious.
