Burned Body Found near Rural Cass County Home

Deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and firefighters from West Peculiar Fire Department responded to a reported fire in the 23600 block of S. Scotsdale Terr. south of Peculiar last Thursday night around 9:45 pm. Firefighters on the scene discovered the body of victim burned in a burn pile in the yard. Investigators have identified the victim as Steven R. Carpenter, 56, of Peculiar. Cass County Detectives and Jackson County Medical Examiners have not determined the nature of the death and are still awaiting lab results. Sheriff Dwight Diehl said, “There appears to be no indication of foul play at this time, however we will wait for all the lab results to be returned before making a final determination.”
Investigators with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office were assisted by the Missouri State Fire Marshall Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The victim’s body was released to the Jackson County Medical Examiner Office for further investigation.
