Communications Officer

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for the position of Communications Officer. Starting salary is $44,825.41

If you have 2 – 5 years of current dispatching experience, starting pay is set at $48,483.16. If you have 6 or more years of current dispatching experience, starting pay is $52,439.39.

Position Summary:

  • Receives, interprets, classifies, prioritizes and responds to calls of a routine and emergency nature, including those involving life-threatening situations.
  • Enters relevant information into the computer information system, for calls for service, radio transmissions, call-outs, and tow requests.
  • Assigns calls to police, fire, and ambulance units for necessary action, determining how many and which units are required for response. Coordinated with police/fire supervisors regarding deployment of personnel. Visually monitors video display terminals and aurally monitors radio frequencies to ensure correct status of deputies and firefighters and pending and dispatched calls, making changes as appropriate. Call out Emergency Management when necessary.
  • Provides information to deputies expeditiously, in areas such as warrants, vehicles, driver’s licenses, probation and parole and criminal history information.
  • Relays information by contacting persons such as those in the internal chain of command; hospitals, tow companies; alarm companies; other agencies, schools, and the news media.
  • Monitors Sheriff’s Office and Justice Center fire alarm and security system alarms.
  • Computer entry and cancellation of warrants, ex-partes, stop orders, stolen autos, stolen articles and missing persons. Confirm warrants with responsible agencies, and updates status of warrants. Computer entry of concealed weapon permits. Computer background checks, for gun permit applications when necessary.
  • Operates the computer terminal and maintains records of computer operations in accordance with MULES and NCIC.
  • Follows defined alternative procedures in the event of computer or other equipment malfunction such as performing shut down and start up procedures. Performs various tasks to ensure proper operation of equipment such as setting and resetting computer system, printers, and paper.

Requirements:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Knowledge of:

  • Geography, street locations, and landmarks in Cass County and municipalities dispatched for.
  • To operate a computer-aided dispatch system, CML telephone system with 9-1-1 emergency lines, non-emergency lines and Telephone Devise for the Deaf (TDD), various law enforcement telecommunications systems, multi-channel radio console with headsets, video display terminals, alarm systems, and other office equipment quickly and accurately.
