Explosive Device Evacuation

05-14-16 The Cass County Sheriff’s is investigating a suspicious device located in a vehicle parked in the lot of the Drexel branch of Hawthorn Bank.

Deputies were called to the 100 block of 2nd street in Drexel at 0753 hours for a suspicious person parked in the lot of Hawthorn Bank. Upon arrival, the deputy located the subject, who was determined to have active warrants and was subsequently arrested. The subject is identified as Caleb M. Ayers of Harrisonville, who is wanted on warrants of vehicle theft from St. Clair County, Probation Revocation from Bates County and municipal ordinance violation from Belton. During the arrest the deputy recovered a loaded handgun and located what appeared to be an improvised explosive device. The area around the Bank was evacuated and the ATF responded, rendered the device safe, and recovered it.

Additional charges for the subject are pending, and all persons have returned to their homes and businesses.
